Design Statement
I was fortunate enough to meet with my director John Rensenhouse within a couple hours after I got the script. I was able to read through the first act and the first thing he told me was that the title of the play refers to a subway stop in Washington D.C. where washed up political consultants and strategists work and get off. He told me he wanted to focus on this idea of the subway and interweave it with the concept of old whistle-stop train tours of turn-of-the century elections. Since the play takes place in so many different locations, we discussed the using trains as a means to cover scene changes, propel the audience into the next scene as well as feed off and establish the location and emotion of the scenes. We decided that we could use trains morphing into other sounds such as airplanes, cars, and thundering audiences. I did a lot of research on YouTube watching and pulling sounds of speakers and crowds from campaign events. Another challenge I had was to make several different cell phones ring from all over the stage and in the house.
