Classical Rock: An approach to Dumas' Three Musketeers

Director Carolyn Howarth took me by surprise when she said for music she was thinking classic rock. She told me that when the audience thinks of  Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and d'Artagnan we should imagine Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. The Musketeers of 17th century France were the rock stars of their age. They partied hard, rebelled, and every kid wanted to be one when they grew up. I immediately got excited about the project, and The Three Musketeers became one of the funnest shows I've ever worked on. Over the course of our several meetings, and listenings, we decided that we would mix classical versions ("string quartet tribute to...", "symphonic music of...", and "London Philharmonic plays..." etc.) of some of the great songs of the era with the original tracks. Over the course of the play we would start with almost exclusively classical instruments, and add more and more rock elements, and by the end they would be all the original rock songs. We wanted the audience to, not initially, but eventually think that they are familiar with the song, and just about when they have it figured out bring in the elements that they would surely be familiar with and think, "I knew it!" For the show, in addition to Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, Queen, the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. I had a tremendously good time doing the show, I think it turned out really well, and the audience enjoyed it.
